When to Enroll

Open Enrollment

  • Open enrollment runs from November 1st through January 14th
  • Open enrollment is a set time period each year when consumers can purchase (or renew) qualified health plans offered through the MNsure marketplace

Year Round Enrollment

Special Enrollment

  • Allows individuals to enroll outside of the open enrollment period if they have a qualifying event
  • In general, an individual has 60 days following a qualifying event to enroll
  • Qualifying events include:
    • Victims of domestic abuse or spousal abandonment
      • Eligible individuals include:
        • Any member of a household who is a victim of domestic abuse
        • Unmarried and dependent victims within the household
        • Victims of spousal abandonment and their dependents
    • Adoption
    • Foster care
    • Birth of a child
    • Marriage
    • Gain of citizenship, national or lawfully present status
    • Loss of health insurance coverage (NOT due to failure to pay premiums or opting out of available coverage)
    • Newly eligible or ineligible for tax credits or cost-sharing reductions (for those already enrolled through MNsure)
    • Permanent address change that provides new choices for Qualified Health Plans
    • Enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe
